Name: American Depress
Artist: Ron English
Manufacturer: Kidrobot
Features: This figure - showing an obese Mickey Mouse crucified on an American Express Black card - is based on the artist's "American Depression" painting from 2008. The credit card numbers reference the date Disney's iconic mouse was created, as well as the start of the Great Depression. The "12/12" expiration date of the card references the end of the Mayan calendar. The back of the figure has an indent for hanging it on a wall. English created 90 8.5" x 11" prints of his 2008 painting for the figure's release party at Kidrobot NY on May 29, 2012.
English first used the crucified Mickey Mouse theme in a print for his 1998 art show at Noiseville Gallery. It featured Mickey on a mousetrap instead of a credit card, and was a commentary on the cleaning up of Times Square in New York. English has adjusted and reused this theme in many ways over the years. The image has spanned paintings, prints and t-shirts, but this is the first toy to use the crucified Mickey theme.
